The opening ceremony will take place in the centre of Rotterdam at the Grote Kerkplein in the attendance of the Deputy Mayor of Rotterdam. De square is named for the medieval church situated on the square: the Great, or St. Lawrence Church (1449 – 1525). This square is near to several sights of Rotterdam including hte Market Hall, and the Nieuwe Maas river and its remarkable bridges, museums and the shopping centre are also nearby.

The opening ceremony will be a celebration of rowing. The main act is the Rotterdam-based Dutch Marineband, they are one of the best military orchestras in the world. With 60 musicians they will play some of their favourite repertoire. To mark the youthful spirit of Rotterdam as a city, the martial arts dancegroup ‘The Four Horsemen’ wil perform their rare combination of freerunning, martial arts trickery and expressive dance. An impressive flag parade will be the grand finale of the opening ceremony. On a big screen the audience will get an impression of the city and its harbour. Current World Junior Champion Marieke Keijser is from Rotterdam. During the opening ceremony we will see her row from the racing course into the city centre of Rotterdam.
